Uses of polymers (Polymers and application of polymers)

Polymers are nearly the material you can see every where in your daily life. Polymers are macro-molecules formed by chemical polymerization reaction of small molecules called monomers.

Polymers have very wide range of applications and uses. Herein, we will study the most important and common uses of polymers and focusing on the most important applications of different types of polymers

Poly(acrylonitrile)

Uses of Poly(acrylonitrile) :

1. Acrylonitrile copolymers are used extensively in textile fiber manufacture
2. Acrylonitrile Copolymers are used in hoses, printing roll surfaces, and in plumbing accessories.
3. Acrylonitrile copolymers also are used in adhesive and coating applications.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)

Properties of Poly(methyl methacrylate)

1. Good mechanical properties.
2. high weatherability.

Uses of Poly(methyl methacrylate)

Can be used as alternative for glass

Cellulose

Natural Sources of cellulose

Wood, cotton, and straw.

Uses of cellulose polymer:

1. Cellulose Derivatives are used in plastics and films.
2. Cellulose Derivatives are used as glues and varnishes.
3. The most important use of cellulose is in paper and textile industry.

Cellulose acetate

Uses cellulose acetate polymer:

1. Cellulose acetate polymers used as Textile fibers,
2. Cellulose acetate polymers used as cigarette filters,
3. Cellulose acetate polymers used as Protective coatings for paper, glass, and metal.
4. Cellulose acetate polymers act as adhesive material for photographic films.

2. Poly(acrylic acid) used as ion exchange resins
3. Poly(acrylic acid) used as also used as adhesives.
4. Poly(acrylic acid) used to disperse pigments in paint manufacture

Polyethylene, high-density (HDPE)

HDPE polymers used as containers for milk and other beverages,

Polyethylene, low-density (LDPE)

Uses of low density Polyethylene:

1. LDPE used as blown film for bags and packaging
2. LDPE used as coatings for glass, paper, and metal.
3. LDPE used as wire and cable coatings.
4. LDPE used as foam for packaging
5. LDPE used in squeeze bottles
6. LDPE used in making plastic bags and wire insulation,

Polystyrene

Uses of Polystyrene

1. Polystyrene is one of the most important polymers used as plastics.
2. Polystyrene used in molded objects such as tableware (forks, knives and spoons)
3. Polystyrene used in many industries including, industries of packaging, furniture automobiles, appliances electronics, and construction.

Polypropylene

Uses of Polypropylene polymer
